Mini review – Poplin Mountain Pants

A major hurdle in the projects department has been overcome. I have been searching for a pair of leisure / hiking pants on and off for more or less a year now. If I was a psychoanalyst, I would probably diagnose this behavior as a bit anal. Thankfully I am not and there is actually a perfectly reasonable explanation for this.

When I set out I had three things in focus – price, function and anatomically correct fit. This proved a difficult task but I eventually ended up with a pair from T&P Outdoor (from ITAB) for about half the price of the more well known and also adequate model from Fjällräven. It took two attempts before I has found my size though …

I have to admit that mail ordering clothes isn’t really my cup of tea. The first pair that I ordered was size C148. I figured that after comparing pants I already had around. Bad idea. What they forgot to tell me was that the model had a very high cut and in fact came in “double sizes” (C148 was in fact C148-150). The second time around I had no choice but to try and decrease waist size, leg length and the high cut. Believe it or not but I am now outfitted with C44-46 khaki outdoor pants. When was the last time I had a size C44-46 pair of pants anyway? Like when I was twelve years old or something.

Well, apart from that little obstruction I am quite satisfied with T&P Outdoor. I can’t exactly accomplish any acrobatic feats wearing these pants, but I couldn’t do that to begin with so .. I mean .. that is hardly a problem. Who would want to do a round house kick wearing boots and a 30kg+ backpack anyway?

Ok, seriously, I’ve had about two weeks to try them out now and even though I don’t have anything substantial to compare with I am fairly impressed. Today I even had the opportunity to try them out in a real live summer rainstorm during some 20min. Toray poplin is far from water proof of course, but unlike most stuff I have in my wardrobe these pants actually have a chance to dry out within a reasonable amount of time. The slithery fabric also makes dirt brush off with ease. Other features include double seams, ventilated front and back pockets and a dual layer of fabric over bottom and knees. The knees btw are anatomically correct.

Now all I need is the perfect backpack, the perfect pair of boots, the perfect tent and the perfect sleeping bag. Nice … :)
