The war is on. Who cares? That is kind of the problem. Not even I give a damn anymore. That is perhaps a sign that I have been thru too many of them. I’d lend a hand, had I not left my Gundam suit in the laundry basket in neverland together with US foreign policy and pragmatism. You can follow the story at Whitehouse.org. But enough about that and on to a more general problem …
People really have no patience these days. We have all become very spoiled with quick and dirty solutions when there really are none. Positive thinking does not move mountains. Nor do dogmatic convictions and haste. Nothing seems good enough anymore.
I know I often call upon the quote by Paul Robeson, basically saying that “you should live life not as it is, but as it was meant to be”. That is however only possibly if you can define good and bad .. or truths and lies. And doing that in the Humanities is a daunting task if you can’t measure it and present it in a differential equation or something. Also, there is no “meaning” to existence as the quote implies. Still, we have such a thing as common sense even though it is difficult to define. And we have a scientific method to go about things.
Either way you choose to see (and change) the world, the method must be pragmatic and be based on verified science. You can of course be lucky and hit bulls eye with a rush of “gut feeling” but why bother … Science has all the ingredients for peace on earth, immortality or give general meaning to people’s lives. It’s not the science that is fundamentally flawed, but rather our impatient attitude and how we choose to relate to and utilize the information. Science in itself is nothing but a systematic gathering and storing of information.
Some people, including many in the scientific community, have started to despair. They will probably call me naive and claim that science can never solve everything. Just like nothing can ever be proved beyond doubt. Of course they are right, if you only see science as a separate process from society. From a statistical standpoint, all our questions will be answered, it’s just a matter of a very time consuming process. I.e. not in the kind of time frame that will soothe our impatience. In a fast world with fast food and information, people want fast results I suppose. Welcome to the Nintendo generation … or the “why we need Technocracy petition”. The use and abuse of science has got to end. Send in the professionals already.
Ok, so I don’t have the answers either .. but since everyone else seems to think that they do .. what the hell …
On a completely different side note, I realized how bad my understanding of Possessive forms (esp. with plural nouns) in the English language actually is. I will try to rectify that by following the guide lines. I seldom create possessive forms using an apostrophe and an s because quite frankly I find it cumbersome. Mainly so because the Swedish language uses similar but much simpler possessive forms. There is nothing more confusing than two ALMOST similar methods. In a silly way it is better to exaggerate the differences so that you don’t confuse the facts.
Follow-up: CDR. I ordered a pack of XEED just to get the problem out of the way. When comparing all the possible options I felt that this brand was at least as good as any of the other low-end brands. We’ll see if the rumour that they are manufactured by Mitsui Chemicals turns out to be true. At any rate they are pretty cheap and the shipping was free so … what do I have to lose? THAT is what I call a well thought thru decision.
I also decided to finally purchase a broadband “router”. It will simplify things greatly around here. The router of choice is the D-link DI-604.
Notice also that I now spell “through” as “thru”. Kind of sloppy, isn’t it?
