Was hot as hell today. I’ve been sweating like a pig. Really bad week to start trimming grass. But I only have myself to blame for that.
I should have seen it coming of course, the thunderstorm that is. They always come this time of year when the temperature rises rapidly. Suffice to say I’ve had some bad experiences with Cumulo-nimbus buildups in the past. You know what it is like. You are minding your own damn business and all of a sudden there is thunder and lightning all around you. While I find thunderstorms kind of cosy they tend to wreck havoc amongst electronic equipment. Especially via terrestrial copper phone lines. But it seems I never learn my lesson ..
A sharp flash of light, almost blinding, couldn’t have been more than a few hundred meters away. God knows where it struck exactly. The spike knocked my DSL offline. Fortunately for me, nothing broke. Both the bridge, dect phone and router survived. Took me a while to troubleshoot and bring the whole thing back again though. It seems the problem was a damaged extension cable that I use to connect from the first socket to the DSL splitter. Best guess is that it absorbed most of the energy and fused somehow. I should examine it more closely to find out what really happened though. Bottom line is that this was a close one. Will I learn my lesson this time?
