But almost. Ah, these vexing thunderstorms. Once again I was caught with my pants down and only quick action prevented any real damage to electronics. You keep counting down and essentially wait until the storm is right on top of you. It’s a real hassle having to shut down all port connections and software and power down the server you know. It’s fortunate since I had at least two hits within 2km, one of which tripped the ground fault interrupters and breakers. Seriously thinking about getting a central surge arrest so that I can sleep a little easier.
Hmm. The same thing happened last year and literally melted the DSL cable and the year before that when my 56k modem was fried. Only those two times I had obviously failed to pull both the power and phone cables. Ahh, it really sucks being wired up to a grid of copper cable that makes the target area for lightning strikes the size of a city. From my point of view the city has not done enough to secure the grid against this sort of thing and rather pushes the issue over to home owners.
Thankfully, thunderstorms only happen a couple of times a year. But when they do happen they are of almost tropical magnitude. Must be something with the landscape and climate here that keeps attracting cumulonimbus cloud formation that produce lightning. Considering I have actually attended physical geography I should have a theory but I don’t.
