ICQ / MSN IM Restrictions

ICQ: 240146
MSN: Don’t use it if you can help it!

After a long time of hesitation I finally set up some regulations when it comes to Instant Messaging usage. I really had no choice. From the very beginning I have been very open-minded with IM programs, but the increase of spam and illicit use has gradually changed that.

  • Authorization requests are NOT screened any longer. The auth. requests have been blocked altogether and thus wont even show up so don’t bother. The only way to establish contact is to send a message and pass the spambot test. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? That way, I wont have to wade through dozens of spam requests every day. No more russian dating agencies.
  • I no longer allow for incoming messages / urls / links from users that aren’t already on my contact list. I do have this nifty plugin nowadays that screens unknown contact and determines if they are spam-bots or real users by requiring a security code. At least real users are able to read and respond to a question. Most of them anyway.

Since I use Miranda, the same rules apply for both ICQ and MSN btw. The best way to contact me is still to use the website. And possibly use PGP encryption, should the matter require complete confidentiality. Obviously, being hard to reach is not a prerequisite for making friends. But what can one do against the dark side of information technology.

About online status messages:

I am using the NEW WebAware which automatically uploads status info using “cURL” as the status changes. Hence, the information on this page is always accurate. Plus I can send a custom message and variables such as the time when I left the computer.
