This and that

|| THE WORLD || So, it is business as usual around here. Even the weather in Sweden never fails to suck. So far the summer has been downright awful. It’s a good thing I’m at work most of the time. Instead of waking up and feeling the tender heat of a summer morning, I hear the rain relentlessly pounding on my bedroom windows.
One thing that is also really predictable is the way people react to all of this. They fall over themselves to book a flight out of here and for warmer and sunnier places. How stupid isn’t that? Instead of just taking their Valium and waiting it out, perhaps saving a week or two of their vacation for the autumn, they rush off during the worst charter month of the year. Paying far too much just so that they can nearly die of heat exhaustion on some beach in Spain instead of shuddering the summer away for free at home. Travel companies of course never hesitate to pad the prices, preying on people’s deprivation and desperation. It’s a bit twisted if you ask me.
And what is with Kos (Greece) anyway? Seems to be the center of everything these days. Just about everyone is going there. Yet it seems like a pretty backwards place, although with some archeological sites and stable weather of course. Yet for some reason I doubt it draws such a fine crowd that they would actually be interested in historical monuments. What a rabble. That is another thing I do not understand (well I do, but it’s a figure of speech you know) .. why people pay loads of money to go all the way across europe just to get stoned and maybe get lucky. Things that one can do just as well at home, should one choose to. It’s a sad thing to observe.
Another equally sad thing that I have been unfortunate enough to observe is how badly children are neglected in many cases, especially during the summer months. I guess I should really get out more often, because for most people this is not really a surprise I guess. But I was kind of stunned by how careless and inconsiderate parents can be. It’s sad to see kids just drifting. Their parents being unable or unwilling to care for them. I have seen parents just shove their kids out in the street in the morning or leave them to take care of themselves for the weekend while they themselves run off to booze. So many broken homes and sad stories, it is difficult even for me to remain indifferent.

|| TV || Elsewhere, season eight of Stargate SG-1 premiered. I’m sure I’ll get my hands on it any minute now. I hope. Stargate fans seem ecstatic about the episode.

|| CAMERA || Still on the prowl for a digital camera. This is starting to annoy me slightly. Still leaning towards the Canon A80 but can’t make up my mind. This could be a new ambivalence record for me. Years in the making and nothing to show for it. But I am getting there … slowly …
