There was some corruption in the database. Since I was so busy fiddling with my new hardware I didn’t see it right away. I mailed my hosting company about it. Maybe they fixed some of it, it seems they did (partially) or maybe an automatic function kicked in, I don’t know, they never get back to me these days. The main table however, “nucleus_item”, was still “in use” according to PhpMyAdmin. A polite way of saying that it is in fact broken.

Eventually I had to pull a “REPAIR TABLE nucleus_item QUICK” SQL-query (simple re-indexing) out of my hat and thankfully that did it. The corruption was not as bad as I had feared. Why this keeps happening is still a mystery however.
