Silent Nation Progress Report

As could be expected, progress is slow. It’s not easy getting things done with all the distractions around here. Dull courses, a heap of new computer games and then there is Star Trek of course. Here is where I stand …

Basically a scaled down, edited and lightened up version of something that I have almost used once. The original, inspirational framework is from some template monger on the net, I think. I will customize it some more but so far I really like it.
I have also decided to use Mambo even though I’m not really comfortable with the way it handles the look and feel of pages. But it is extremely easy to use and powerful and I have previous experience with the system so .. what the hell. Besides, the next version promises a “template-within-template” system, much like Nucleus has its Skin-Template system. That will surely break a negative trend with all Mambo sites looking 90% alike contentwise.

I’ve also examined the use of PNGs again. For the sake of compatibility and speed I will not be using transparent PNGs anymore. I really hate Photoshop for not handling 8bit alpha anyway. And another thing, it’s a shame that Photoshop has to save gamma information in the PNGs. When colors really matter, I’m forced to use PNG Tweak or PNGCrush to rid them of the meta tag. It’s the only quick way I’ve found to make sure that a page layout looks the same in IE and Firefox as far as colors are concerned. If one does not accept to fall back and use GIF of course.
