This is perhaps stating the obvious, but I’ve been hit with a lot of comment spam lately. I did install the Comment Control plugin as a first measure but that isn’t the perfect solution either. I’m not a big fan of moderation because a) it’s a form of censorship and b) it constitutes work for me.
Other plugins that deals with comment spam are NP_Blacklist and NP_Captcha. Both have their weaknesses of course. A Blacklist, even though updated regularly, never quite filters out all bad words. But looking back it would at least have handled recent spam attacks. And a Captcha is a little tedious to enter for the casual commenter of course. But at least both are automated. The goal is not to have to maintain comment pruning for all eternity and risk a total breakdown if one ever takes an extended leave of absence.
