The Strawberries

As someone who grows strawberries himself, I’m kind of impressed with the high quality imports that I’ve been seeing since about two years ago. Something has definitely changed. New species perhaps. Not that they ever print that on the box, as if people don’t care.
Another explanation could be better infrastructure with transports and such. Or maybe someone just realized that people like strawberries. Never too late to make a buck it seems. Either way I like it. The crops from Spain and Marocco that arrived as early as three to four weeks ago are in my experience better and tastier than what we usually grow nationally, even during the peak of the summer growing season. The price is comparable or better also.

This brings me to grapes. The fruit industry seems kind of lumbering from where I’m standing. Despite so called seedless grapes being around for decades, they have been scarce on the shelves. And even though growth hormones are but a clumsy memory and genetic variations are widely available, change has been slow. I have noticed a few new species over the last couple of months and I am hopeful that we will see more of them. I understand of course that one doesn’t just uproot an entire vineyard just for the pleasure of planting seedless grapes. Things take time. And it takes even longer for products to reach the consumer line. There may be IP issues combined with growing seasons. Just look at the Kiwi Gold.

Speaking of strawberries and such, it’s soon time to get around to the garden. Most of it has thawed by now.
