The Break of Winter

I have a hunch this is it. It is the middle of March after all. Not even the mighty winter can stand against the onslaught of the world.
For the first time ever I feel kind of sad to see the winter pass. It’s a period of tranquility for me. When duty in all its forms [...]

The Fallen

The demons of stupidity are back again en masse.
You know, once in a while I take a walk through the commercial district. It’s a pretty small town but still there is buzzing activity of shops and outlets. And as I stroll by, laconically window shopping as it were, I come to a dire conclusion. Something [...]

The Layout

Bottom line is, topic separation. Also considering moving all site and script related topics to a new branch and their own log. Just because they also lack public interest.
The decision to disable commenting and certain other features from the personal log (i.e. this log) is a very conscious one. I get a feeling that when [...]

The Quake Era

I’m feeling nostalgic. What a horrid emotion, as if the present doesn’t provide enough obstacles to overcome and constructs to fight.
One thing that usually comes drifting back is my experience in online first person gaming. Namely with Quake 1. Something I usually don’t talk about. It’s too bad since I was quite good at it, [...]

The Mp3 Player, Prequel

It just struck me the other week how baffling it is that I as of yet haven’t invested in an portable MP3 player. Me of all people. It’s not that I don’t know how to use it, that I don’t have any MP3 files (my collection is legendary if you will), that I don’t need [...]

Thumbnail Caching

I’ve added a caching routine to the Video Database thumbnail function as well as cleaned up some of the code with the Coppermine thumbnail. It seemed like a bad idea to keep calling GD every time someone accessed a document. Especially since the thumbnail is now on EVERY page.
Simple image and flat file caching in [...]

NP_Referrer

Rakaz has finally released Trackback 2.0 and Referrer 1.0 for Nucleus. And the good news is that I can get Referrer to work as intended now. Global referrers are being shown on the Profile page along with some of the other stats plugins (NP_Views/NP_MostViewed, NP_QueryLog) for Nucleus as well as the XBEL import system.
In addition:
I [...]

The Sickday

It’s so typical. The moment you leave your castle and venture out into the world, if only for a brief moment, you catch some virus. And the next thing you know you wake up in the middle of the night with a booming headache and the desire to vomit.
Anyway, I did what I always do, [...]

Nucleus 3.2

New version out. Unfortunately for me, I’ve modified some things, like the comment system and will probably pass on this upgrade until I have time to find the changes I have made and do the same to 3.2.
Specifically, the changes to the commenting system (with an extra field) were also made by another user who [...]

The Whisper

I’ve discovered that one of the best ways to tell social adaptation, is to listen to the way people whisper. Or fail to.
I’ve recently mastered whispering, but it took quite some time before I thought about it in a reflexive manner. I never had any use for it. And my philosophy has always been that [...]
