So I got this letter from Egmont Publishing today. Some Swedish publishing firm which name I recognize vaguely from gaming magazines and gaming consoles. Anyway, it starts out saying “Congratulations! You’re about to turn 25 …” and goes on to say “we have this new cool magazine for MEN, please accept this discounted subscription.”
So what is this? Supposedly 25 is the magic number in the eyes of media mercantilism. I’m sure they have some statistics to back this up. Income and employment data for instance. They certainly don’t want people who can’t afford to buy the crap they’re advertising. Because make no mistake, that is the ultimate goal of any such life style magazine.
And what are they selling? A magazine called “KING”, which offers fashion and life style advise for men. As well as accessories, watches, smells (they probably don’t dare use the word perfume) .. the list goes on with more queer stuff. If “men” are buying this crap and accessorizing .. well .. it makes me sick. I accessorize too, but more along the line of stuff that works and may save my life one day. Knife, compass and so on. I really take offense to marketing this as a men’s magazine. Lets face it, no amount of scantily clad women are going to make me like this (not that they promised anything of the kind). They just got off on the wrong foot with me.
Commercial. Opportunist. Tacky. And even a bit discriminatory.
