I know I’ve been rambling on and defending low-price food stores, like LIDL. But after having bought a bad batch of eggs (LIDL), presumably expired and “re-issued”, I will be cutting back on at least animal products with short expiry dates (and that are known to cause sickness if not handled properly). Milk will be the only exception for now. So, no more minced meat, eggs or German sausages.
Update: To be completely honest I think I overreacted. Not to say that there weren’t some really bad eggs in the batch, a higher ratio than you’d expect, but in the end I could still use most of them. I also had a similar experience with another batch from a local ICA store. Not bad per se, certainly not “rotten”, just not fresh. The bottom line is that the food chain is getting sloppy. You’d think that people in the business ought to know how to store eggs. But they don’t. I’ve even seen stores that keep stacks of cartons of eggs un-refrigerated, at least during the day. Which is fine if you plan to use them right away, but obviously unacceptable under any other circumstances. Sure, you can store eggs for a very long time, but if you’re a perfectionist it just wont do. And it’s all irrelevant when things have gone awry already in the distribution chain.
Just to clarify. It’s not just a LIDL problem. They’re at best the symptom. Overall, I think we can kiss our once superior Swedish food chain and industry goodbye.
It’s like that new minced meat that we’re starting to see. At least with the new centralized packaging we can add another week to the expiry date. But at what cost? Will it really taste the same after a full week? And what about the ridiculously, hideously large mince … no, I think I’ll take a pass on that. But hey, if you really want to force people into vegetarianism, you’re doing a swell job!
