I had an urge to try something new and so I picked up a bag of Blå Band Outdoor Meal “Tandoori Stew” this morning on my usual Saturday grocery shopping tour. I was curious how freeze dried foods had progressed since the watery soups of old.
For the record I payed like 25 SEK for this bag of freeze dried tandoori. Some resellers sometimes go as high as 39 SEK. In general, a freeze dried lunch can cost anywhere between 12 and 70 SEK. A bag is usually meant for two servings, but that is given very strict rationing. Requirements for cooking are essentially 40 cl of water and 10 min heating, though one can turn it down to a mere simmer once the mix had started to boil.
Bottom line: Freeze dried tandoori is better than anything I could have accomplished. Actually it’s so good it’s amazing. Creamy, spicy and rich with flavour and texture. The Outdoor Meal selection, so far as I have sampled it or seen it reviewed, proves that freeze dried food can be as good, or better than, any prefab or fast food. In all honesty, could I have made a better tandoori? Sure, but not for 25 SEK and I wouldn’t even know where to begin.
One should note though that not all freeze dried foods are created equal. Not even the price can be a guide line as I have come to realize. Blå Band seems to be a sure bet currently though, at least here in Sweden.
