Voice Mail Telescams

I just had an unsolicited call by an automated telephone voice mail system. Kind of neat even though it’s not exactly novel. First time it ever happened to me though. Seems as they have started targeting Swedish ranges of phone numbers now. The call was international and originated from 009724900000. Something about winning a cruise. I didn’t really have time to listen to the entire message but from searching the web I gathered that it is more of a scam than harmless spam. Ah, the effort people put into this.

I just got at least one, possibly two such calls here in Ireland. They seem to original from Israel.
How do these callers make their money?

  3. 3 Linda Posted November 21st, 2005 - 18:53

My sister got one of those calls just the other day. it told her to dial 9 and she did and then they said that your number has been transfered and then they hanged up. But it doesnt seem to have happened anything to the phone line or so. did anything happen to your phone afterwords?

  4. 4 Maz Posted November 23rd, 2005 - 21:22

I got these in Ireland too, after a bit of searching I’ve seen they originate in Jeruselem, Israel.

Anyway to stop these calls?! I’ve had about 10 in the last few days

I was called in Sweden yesterday but was in the stable at the time and just wanted to look up the unanswered number! Anything bad happening from answering the call? I’ve heard of the cruisestory before and there is actually a cruise but it’s not for free! I wonder about any BIG BILLS after the call????

Hi, name is Petter Sundsten and I’m a reporter at the Swedish newspaper Expressen. We want to write about these phone calls that you refer to.

I’m interested to get in touch with people who actually have pressed the number 9 button.

    Please contact me at petter.sundsten@expressen.se

    Yours sincerely

  9. 9 Ida Ask, Umeå Posted December 1st, 2005 - 16:27

definitely a major scam! I got the call today, and I said I will not give you my visa card number over the telephone, so why don’t you send me a letter and I can mail you my card number…But the guy would not go for that, he claimed that this offer was just for like 2 days, and that the letter might get lost in the mail or that the mail would take to long (I asked him about this twice, and he gave me a different answer each time). Any serious company would agree to send you an ordinary letter if they wanted to know your card number. Anyway, why would they give free cruises away to promote themselves? If they wanted to promote themselves, they could have used for example tv or newspaper commercials.

  10. 10 Linda-Marie Lundgren Posted December 1st, 2005 - 17:48

    Hello!

I got the phonecall today as well, however, I hung up after they had told me to press 9 to "collect my prize" since it was a machine that dialed.

First off I do not believe that you can win prizes without even taking part in a contest ;)

Secondly I doubt that they call the winners with a machine.

Thirdly, as Ida Ask said before, a serious company would not demand your credit card and have it as "only solution" to collect a prize, but have at least a secondary solution in case you want to verify that they are real.

I sure hope that people think twice before falling for this scam. I feel sorry for those that have been fooled, but at least it’s an experience they can learn from.
    Respectfully yours,

    Linda-Marie

    Im scared!

  13. 13 Anders Posted December 6th, 2005 - 20:18

My guess is that dont call back any calls from abroad unless you are expecting such calls. there is no way they can scam you if you dont bother calling back. IF you call back you supposedly can pay for a call thats made to the originating country like Israel. whatever the fee for such a call is…..however, probably you pay your operator for connecting to Israel and no more…BUT there is a slight chance theres a pay service like the ones in Sweden at the other end. God knows at what cost.
I think this scams randomly picks numbers to call from the swedish phonebock on the internet.
You can always call Telia f.ex and tell them about the scam. If there is unusual costs because of this scam, its there responsibility to check and protect you from such scams. If you are lucky the might even delete yor costs.

I live in Sweden and just recieved a call from number 009724900000, I hung up quickly before even pressing 9… Which is exactly what you all should do if you recieve one of these calls!!
Coz seriously, think about it, how is it possible to win a contest you haven’t entered?!

So, just hang up! Hang up! Haaang up.

(You don’t wanna fall for phonescams.)

  18. 18 Philip Posted December 20th, 2005 - 16:29

This is strange. As all of you I got this call and I presed 9. After a while of hereing the british woman telling me that I wasn´t paying for the call I got susipios and hung up. After that a tryed to redail it, ´Telia responded and said that you have to press a password and if you pressed wrong 7 times it will be locked. So I presed wrong password 7 times and locked the phonnummber as a revange.

Then I googled the nummber and ended up here. I phoned Petter Sundsten, a reproter att the newspaper Expressen, and told hima bout it all. He said that it is a way of tricking people on their money.
And he said that after a while you will be conected to an man that will tell you that they have got to gett your credit cardnumber. then they will empty your account.

  29. 29 Anders, Sweden Posted January 18th, 2006 - 16:36

    Hi,
What time did you get the call Aron?

I, myself got it around 16:00, 18th Januari, as I guess you did.
Do you think that they can call up several persons in the same moment.
Anyway, it’s all very annoying and I hope there’s a way to stop these calls.

  30. 30 Stefan, Sweden, Gothenburg Posted January 18th, 2006 - 19:33

Hi! (got here while googling the telephone number)

Just got called from this number as well (18th January 2006 19:10) and I off course pressed 9 to see what happened (I’ve heard about this scam before).
So I get connected to a guy who barely speaks English and he says that I have won a cruise for 4 people for free and asks if that’s ok. Sure I said, if it’s free I want it and then he continued and asked me if I had visited their website. I answered no and then he got quiet for like 45 seconds (I heard he tapping on the computer and A LOT of telphone voices in the background) so I asked him what he was doing because it got so quiet suddenly.
He then became somewhat aggressively and said (in bad english) "I’m looking up info for you so I don’t waste your time and you don’t waste mine" . Alright I said and waited for another 15-20 seconds or so…
He then wanted some info from me he said, firstly my name. I then asked him (3 times) if he what kind of other info he needed. He then said that he wanted my name and telephone number.
Sure, telling my name can’t hurt so I said my name, and then I said "and the telephone number you already have because you called me remember?" and then he just hung up..

Stupid guy.. I never got my Bahamas cruise ;) But it was very hard trying to understand what he was saying, sluddering on the words and bad english etc…

Good thing I found this page. Got my call just a few minutes ago (around 18:13 local time). Just thought I’d google it and check what it was, now I know.

  35. 35 Anders Nyman, Cint Posted January 23rd, 2006 - 16:35

Do anyone actually have a recording of one of these scams (at least two different are calling numbers in sweden right now)? I’ve got one, and this is what it said:

""Congratulations! You have just won a free, all-inclusive cruise to the Caribbean! To claim your prize, simply call ring free 001 407 830 0147. Again, call ring free 0014078300147 and don’t forget to mention your claim code "cruise"."

You can listen to it here:
    http://www.cint.se/test/res...

If you have a recording of the other version ("dial nine"), i’d be happy to publish it on the web at the swedish consumer website Cint, where I work. Read more here (in swedish):

    or email info@cint.se

  36. 36 Sara, Småland, Sweden Posted January 23rd, 2006 - 21:22

We also got a call just about an hour ago, so they’re starting to call ppl in småland now eh? ;) Well, it definately is a scam, since no one has entered the contest. But what are they after? To see how stupid ppl are? I hung up before pressing anything, since I never entered any contest! Is there no way to trace these people, and frame them for anything? it’s pretty uncomfortable when they’re just calling and starts asking for personal info.

    Strange, that’s what it is!

    Have a good one :)

    Cheers

It really scares you, because you don’t wanna end up with a large phonebill or something if it’s like a collect-call.

G’day - just got a message left on our home telephone number "Congratulations etc…"

What happens when you dial the "ring free" number 0014078300147?

From my searching looks like they get you to call a toll number 1900 in Australia and these can cost $$$’s per minute and of course there is no cruise!

    Thanks and regards,

I got the phone call telling me I had won today, after they had told me to press 9 to "collect my prize" I did so because I’ve had about 10 of these calls.
The guy who answered the call said "how are you doing" and I said "not very well as I’ve just run to pick this call and did he know how many times he has phoned this number".
He then said "just give me your noumber so we can remove it". So I gave him my number and then he said "OK I’ll get it to ring you back every ten minutes have a nice day" and promptly hung up.

I feel like hanging him up at the moment.

Well good folks these yobs are calling numbers in Adelaide Australia. Similar line about the ".. win a cruise to the Bahamas .." blah blah.

My daughter answered the phone thinking that it was one of her friends, and also dialed the 9 number as requested. I believe that there was then a long pause during which she hung up. I do not have calling number ID so do not know where the call originated.

I’ve just missed the call from this strange number. Wondering who wanted to call me from Israel I googled the internet and ended up on this site! Living in a subburban aera near Bern (Switzerland), in a little town beginning with "Z", I think they just arrived at the end of the phone book!

They just called Zurich, Switzerland again. I wondered about the number 009724900000, so I googled it and ended up here.
So after Sweden, Switzerland, they might try to call Syria and Tahiti:confused:- so good luck

Hi, I’m from the South of Switzerland, near Locarno and got this call
    (009724900000) on 02.03.2006, at 19.04, in my absence…
Good, this site is existing, I actually was already wondering about some Arabian Emirates Country or something…

I just let it on my ISDN-display and did not yet check it out, so today I had some free minutes and ended up here…

Watch out, people, for not being cheated!!!

I got the call in Manitoba CANADA August 28, 2006. I would sure like to know if someone actually contacted the cruise line and got a good deal on a cruise or else just lost a pile of money?

  85. 85 Lorinda Posted September 1st, 2006 - 03:41

Oh…so I’m not going to the Carribean??? ha ha! Just got the call here in Alberta Canada today and, luckily, tried to google the phone number as I couldn’t remember entering any contests!
Scammers! Thanks for the forewarning (though it definitely seemed too good to be true!!)

Hello everyone I’m from Red Deer Alberta. It seems these individuals who are doing this have found us as well. I too am interested in how they got my number. Shows that nothing is really secure these days.
Like the saying goes: If it sounds to good to be true, it most likely is. Thats why I thank Google & Battleangel for offering a means to get more information and to communicate with others.

    Have a great one everyone.
