Network slow-downs and drops

I seem to have fixed whatever caused the stand by issues in Windows XP. Suspend to ram (S3) that is. At least on the two workstations I’ve tried.

The LAN issue entailed the network access slowing down to a point where you could surf but not sent files or stream video. 100MBPS effectively became around 100 kb/s or so. But the network never quit on me or anything like that. The WLAN issue entailed network access to disappear completely after resuming normal operations. This would require waiting x number of minutes and / or rebooting.

LAN: Determined and desperate to fiddle with the settings I accessed the settings for the actual NIC and noticed how it was set to “optimize for CPU.” Changed that to “throughput.” And after simultaneously turning off power saving features it seems to have fixed the grievance.

WLAN: Basically, new drivers from Dlink. And looking through the device manager, I realized that it was listing old drivers for the wireless NIC. Like really ancient. As in the ones that came with Windows presumably. Weird. So I manually updated the drivers via the device manager (without the dlink installer) and then I ran the Dlink installer just to be sure. Much fewer problems so far and reconnecting to the WLAN now happens in seconds, not minutes, if it indeed noticeably loses its connection. 9/10 times so far it hasn’t.

The AutoPatcher September edition sure didn’t hurt either but I am confident that the problem was caused by drivers, power saving and NIC settings.
