Polaroid goggles

I couldn’t keep myself from ordering a pair. I figured it was almost five years since I last bought a pair of sunglasses so … what the hell. They may not be perfect but sometimes you have to come to a decision. Friluft.se managed the order nicely, packaged and sent swiftly, arriving the very next day. Strangely enough I’ve been unable to find the goggles anywhere else on the net. They ARE indeed made by Polaroid but beyond that they are a mystery. So, what do you get for a mere $50? Are they any good at all?

Yes and no. The frame was a little simpler than I had anticipated. But it works. The lenses seems sharp and perfectly polarized though and I reckon most of the effort went into the optics as opposed to the frame and features. I believe that was a wise choice even though I miss being able to adjust things like the nose piece. In fact, nothing at all seems adjustable. A small letdown. Though the entire frame does flex a little around the center piece.
The strap is also, like the image indicates, impossible to remove. Not that you really need to. It comes in handy if you want to take off your glasses and let them swing from your neck for instance. But again, the strap could have been just a tad longer. Or maybe I just have a big head. The strap seems to be doing its job but once you pull it really tight the glasses themselves may become uncomfortable. Again, that may reflect the shape of my face rather than a general problem. All in all el cheapo sunglasses that aspire to be more than they are and almost succeed.

According to the info provided by the reseller, these glasses were designed, years ago I assume, for the Ocean Race. Hence, they have typical characteristics for water sports goggles. Polarized. UV. The strap. Floating. Sideways protection. Not having used polarized lenses for a couple of years, it feels good to have that feature back.

Things I need to try before I give a final verdict include exercising, i.e. testing the moisture buildup, the wind deflection and getting a general feel for the glasses when worn for extended periods of time.
