Black & Decker GL 701

So the last trimmer didn’t really work. I decided to go back to an updated version a corded trimmer instead and the 550W Black & Decker GL 701 QS which is a “faux petrol / brush cutter” type model. I thought about actual petrol a couple of times but decided again that it would be too noisy, smelly, carcinogenic and overkill for the typical garden. Plus there was this autumn clearing sale going on. It really pays off to buy hardware out of season.

September 25, 2007: As I tested the trimmer I realized over time that there was something wrong with the Reflex Plus line feed system. So in I returned the trimmer and got a brand new GL 701. Both the B&D support as well as the reseller hinted that there was indeed a line feed problem and that it had been fixed.

July 3, 2008: Having serious feed problems once more. This time I haven’t even replace the original line or spool. I’m starting to figure out how and when the problem appears. It would seem that at 50%-33% capacity, there is a balancing or weight issue with the feed mechanism that causes the line to feed uncontrollably. At first it is barely noticeable. It then shows during heavy load and then progressively with less and less resistance until you can run the trimmer “dry” and have it feed the last half meter or so. With the price that B&D charges for spools or line, and the poor availability locally, this is beyond annoying.

July 8, 2008: B&D support arranged to have an “upgrade kit” sent to me. Supposedly it would be a refined line feed mechanism.
