ATI Catalyst Control Center

I recently upgraded the driver for the R9700, experienced some system irregularities (hinting of a .Net problem) and as it turns out, ATI had included something late last year, namely the Catalyst Control Center, which was previously optional. Yeah, so I guess I should check for new drivers more often. But anyway, the old driver package was apparently the last one to ship with the “old” control panel. More on why the Catalyst Control Center Package (CCC) is nauseating here. The two instances of CLI.exe alone were eating 20 MB each during boot, slowing down the start-up process by several seconds, levelling out at 2 x 4 MB. Some have allegedly witnessed the application using well in excess of 200 MB in some instances. Not to mention the inconvenience of having it play around with .Net.

So, I found that the preferred solution was to uninstall the CCC, or just install the “Display Driver Only” in the first place, and use the 3rd party ATI Tray Tools instead. Works like a charm so far, in the unlikely eventuality that one should feel compelled to change some settings. The tray module uses about 1.5 MB running in the background.

A troubling trend indeed this squandering of CPU cycles and RAM just for the bells and whistles. I wonder how long before ATI will discontinue the Display Driver Only option as well. A brave new world of computing indeed.
