Seeing as I didn’t have a way to play digital media away from the HTPC, I bought a DIVX-capable DVD player for the living room. It’s a compromise but it does get the job done at a reasonable price, with maximum user friendliness. I reckoned that since there weren’t any hardware solutions able to play ogm /mkv or h264 anyway in mid 2007, it would be better to wait for the market to adjust. Looking forward to a mediacenter / mediaextender with a hd slot, usb port, 802.11n wlan, utorrent, good looks, good drivers and the ability to play everything out of the box.
About the 5140 specifically I enjoy the functionality that you do get. Plays pretty much everything divx/xvid that you throw at it and easy to make region free of course. Main gripes include slow disc loading, quirky remote aiming, some rendering issues with subs, lack of DTS decoding and of course no HDMI since those players were still rare in early 2007.
