This year I tried no less than five new varieties: Rocket, Minerva, Pentland Javelin, Princess and Timo. I used to grow Early Puritan, but sometimes you have got to try something new.
Out of the five, only one - Princess - was a clear disappointment in terms of taste. As one who grows potatoes for a hobby, yield or even resistance aren’t that important. The best variety in my opinion was Rocket, followed by Timo and Pentland Javelin. Both Pentland, to some degree, and Minerva tended to produce hideously large and unseemly tubers. However, it should be noted that none of the varieties were sensational in any way.
Growing potatoes in pallet collars proved to be quite efficient and clean, even though the depth could have been greater. Trust me when I say that you need a lot of sand, soil and natural fertilizer to fill up the equivalent to eight collars. The main problem with the collars was relative expose to direct sunlight which required constant watering. Vines dried up really quickly, but overall growth was amazing considering. The question is really what do to with all these spuds. Next year I’ll go for less potatoes and more of some other vegetables.
