IKEA, autumn 2008

ikea I was at IKEA the other day. Didn’t buy much. I guess I am getting saturated with furniture.

Given my usual positive attitude towards IKEA you may be surprised to find that I have two rather negative observations regarding the company. The first is about the food and the second is about surveillance cameras.

About the food, it seems to me that prices have been going up and the size of the meals have been going down in recent years. And never has this been more evident than at my recent visit. It is a big deal since the food at IKEA used to be really cheap and yet reliable – kind of like their furniture. You could go there just to see what the kitchen had whipped up. But not any more evidently.

About the cameras this must have happened in the last six months or so. There are big notice signs everywhere and even though I didn’t notice this myself they even have cameras in the restrooms. Well, they actually wont film you with your pants down, but they do film about anything else. And that just isn’t right. Plus it seems this doesn’t fill any sensible function. If it is meant to curb vandalizing or shoplifting or stealing paper towels, you could just as well do that in the last private space, namely the toilet stall. The only way to permanently solve this (if cameras do indeed impact professional thieves or people who are desperate or determined enough) would be to completely invade your privacy. And since you can’t do that the whole idea of cameras in restrooms is just slow-witted.

What has the world come to if you can’t even feel safe at IKEA?
