A far cry from a decent gaming experience. Some reviewers have seen the light (Gamespy) but many are still drinking the Kool-Aid. It could very well be one of the biggest disappointments this year considering the hype and its notable predecessor.
Aside from the gaming issues, which I think are better explained by Gamespy, the game so far has been the usual Ubisoft load of crap. It is actually hard to imagine that Crytek WASN’T involved because this seems to be right up their ally. It is about as immersive as putting your head in a bowl of oatmeal. The characters seem out of place and the story could have been a Steven Seagal movie. The fighting is strange, controls are crude and the in-game lighting is very odd. Adding insult to injury, it is obvious that the game was designed with consoles in mind. I long for the days when games were made for the PC. Period. And then ported to consoles. Not co-developed or ported from consoles to the PC.
Although it runs slightly better than lets say a contemporary game like Crysis Warhead it is riddled with the same strange periodic slowdowns. The game just locks up for a couple of seconds once in a while for instance. And after having played just half an hour or so it crashed silently to the desktop. Exactly like what happened in Crysis Warhead (but never in Crysis) and Assassin’s Creed. Just brilliant.
Here a few games that are in fact running flawlessly: Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis, Spore, Forged Alliance, WoW, Sins of a Solar Empire .. etc .. etc. So I am puzzled as to why this is happening in some titles. Maybe it’s some punishment for ATI users that Nvidia have introduced since they started working more closely with game developers.
