Much to my surprise, D-Link released a new firmware (2.30EU) for the DIR-635 router (hardware B1 as well as B3). Among other things it does add support for the USB port on the back of the device so that it can be used for both Network USB, 3G USB Adapter as well as the original WCN Configuration option.
I just tried installing the shareport software and plugged in an old 1GB Kingston USB stick. HD Tach puts the speed at about 3.6MB/s which isn’t blazing fast but acceptable. I think the stick should be good for 9MB/s on its own.
Oh well. It’s good enough for most USB units except for hard drives probably. The only other downside is that only one user can connect at a time. But it seems like any eligible user can boot other users if they need fast access to a unit. Also, using a USB stick it kept saying the unit was in use when I wanted to disconnect, even though I had positively dismounted the unit from my terminal first.
