Yes I admit. This was way over my budget. But I figured that since I buy all my glass second hand, I’ll easily get my money back one day. This particular lens design for instance has been around since 1995 and is probably not going anywhere.

I chose the 2.8L in favour of the 4L because of future compatibility with extenders without raising aperture too high. As for IS I did consider this, but ultimately felt that it wouldn’t save enough images anyway (they’ll never be tack sharp no matter what) and at 200mm, where this lens will be most of the time, you probably need a tripod or monopod anyway if you are in any way serious about photography.
