I got a set of Kenko tubes for my DSLR. Primarily to boost magnification from 1:1 to 2:1 on the Canon EF 100mm macro lens.
Just going from 1:1 to 2:1 is a huge step in terms of functionality. At this level, you really start to take a hit from depth of field, camera shake, focusing etc. So far I’ve had problems getting really sharp images out of the box, despite a good tripod, cable release, mirror lockup and a macro rail / slider. I believe the problem is mainly due to a lack of smart lighting and thus ungodly shutter speeds. Considering some sort of macro flash or diffused off-camera flash.
Oh and also … I noticed a ton of little specks on the lens / sensor. That is another thing to watch out for at higher magnification (and smaller apertures, like f/14 and beyond). I sure need to do some dusting. And on a similar note, often I’m quite disappointed with the way things look up close. The amount of dust, dirt and imperfections on things is simply stunning.

Those last two shots ended up unintentionally clever.
