Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 1.4X

KenkoTeleplusPro300DGI figured I needed one of these groovy teleconverters. So I picked up a Kenko 1.4X. The price was considerably better than Canon’s equivalent and the difference in edge sharpness isn’t a big deal because the APS-C sensor doesn’t utilize the entire optical area anyway.

I thought about getting a 2.0X as well but reconsidered when comparing real life results. Unless you use a telephoto prime L lens, it would probably do more harm than good. This teleconverter however stays within limits, and doesn’t screw up the aperture or iq too badly. Of course, it doesn’t do much good on my 70-200mm lens either since it just pushes the focal length (including the 1.6X "crop factor") at 200mm from 322mm to 451mm.

Another use for the teleconverter is of course macro. It does degrade the iq somewhat, unlike tubes, but it doesn’t move the center of gravity so far out, gives you more room to work with skittish insects, and unlike tubes it has other practical uses as well (in the telephoto range). I didn’t do the math but I read somewhere that the effective magnification with a 1.4x converter + 68mm tubes + 100mm 1:1 lens = 3:1 (stacked in that order). Up from 2:1 with just the tubes and the macro lens.
