Broken: Master/Slave Outlet

It figures of course that the master/slave outlet I bought a little over a year ago would throw a fit just as the base warranty had expired. Fortunately Kjell & Company replaced the unit based on the idea that it had been broken from the beginning and within the three year extended warranty. It would have been pretty self-defeating from a cost saving perspective to buy these premium priced outlets if they break down after only a year.

I don’t know what happened, or indeed how these outlets actually do their thing, what components are involved etc, but something must have clearly been damaged or come loose. Sometimes it would cause the monitor to flicker and fizzle, as if it had shut down the slave outlets for a couple of milliseconds. And sometimes the slave outlets would simply not turn on at all with the master outlet. Tapping the outlet (hard) or shaking it would work in under these circumstances. Not entirely crazy about the idea that this outlet could be mangling the electronics inside the CRT monitor. On a side note though, at least there is nothing wrong with the monitor. That fizzling sound almost convinced me that the old trusty Mitsubishi was about to die.

The unit is of course a generic, made in China, outlet that seems to be sold under different brands across the world. But other than this it has been doing it’s thing. I do have one more of these outlets that seems to be working quite nicely still.
