Much to my surprise, the gaming mouse I use for this setup seems to be on its last leg as far as the scroll wheel is concerned.
The click function of the wheel, or third mouse button, seems simply to have worn out to the point where it is unresponsive or completely ceases functioning at times. The product is about a year and a half old. I had expected more, but in retrospect I should have seen it coming – what with the monstrous metal scroll wheel and all.
Will be sending it back for a replacement. Since MS products are covered by a three year warranty it isn’t a big deal as long as the reseller doesn’t act up.
Other than that I’ve been fairly pleased with the product. It has been working without fail, and I couldn’t live without all the smartly positioned buttons and the DPI switch. The only thing I could wish for is even more buttons, and if possible a less slippery scroll wheel and rubber sides that don’t wear down and peel off quite so easily. I still stand by this mouse and would claim it is one of the better mice on the market still today. It has enough DPI (2000) for most people, is slightly larger than most mice, has a hard scroll wheel and it handles brilliantly in games – once you get used to it. But that is after all the case with all new controllers. I’ve never tried one that I instantaneously felt comfortable with.
Now, having to temporarily switch to my old Intellimouse Optical was a real cold shower. Sure, it is worn down to the bone, but its layout and functionality makes me wonder how I ever played games with that thing. Plus its DPI is so low I could kill someone. I didn’t want to do the USB polling rate hack so I got it hooked up to PS/2 instead and hiked the sample rate to 200. Thankfully, I’m getting a replacement mouse any day now.
