Horned Grebe

I normally don’t photograph birds because it’s just a lot of work. But this semi-rare bird happens to be nesting close by. Here is the Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) displaying two of its characteristics, (1) the chick riding on the back of its parents and (2) eating feathers, in this case feeding it to the chick.

Finally some decent shots. As good as it is going to get given the time allotted, skill level, no special access to animals, no cheating and the limitations of the Sigma 150-500.

Picasa gallery. Largely unprocessed, no WB corrections (unlike the pic above), just auto settings, lens correction in Lightroom and a few crops.

Other than the Sigma 150-500 OS I used a monopod for most of the shots. Don’t know if it made a huge difference but at least it made it more comfortable to operate the lens extensively. Sure wouldn’t mind a lens with a wider aperture (fuzzy otters, awful seperation and bokeh) but given the price of a serious 500mm lens and the fact that there is no real purpose to my sporadic photography I think this is the end of the line.

Pill popping

Here is what I eat a day nowadays. And yes, it is actually two pills down from what I was originally meant to have.

There you go, that is 21 pills all in all. Though obviously that includes a hell of a lot of fish oil and one vitamin supplement.

Nibe heat pump failure

The Nibe Fighter 1210 heat pump for the geothermal system after it somehow malfunctioned and presumably built up a massive internal pressure in the refrigeration circuit near the heavily shielded compressor. Not what you’d expect after just five years operation.

Helix pomatia

The Helix pomatia (Roman Snail, Burgundy Snail, or Edible Snail) is quite rare so far north even though they are highly resilient in theory. They are of course very common on the continent where they also double as a “delicacy” among the more backward cultures. I have this one locale where I have regularly observed a colony over the last couple of years. The world certainly needs more molluscs.
